HISTORY OF THE CTR RING

Latter-day Saints around the world use CTR rings as reminders to choose God and follow the gospel of Jesus Christ. But who came up with the first CTR ring? Let's take a closer look at its history.

In 1963, three women from the Primary General Board, Helen Alldredge, Lurene Wilkinson, and Margery Cannon created the original CTR ring design in conjunction with the first Choose the Right manual for children.
In 1970, Naomi W. Randall (above), recommended both the CTR shield design and CTR rings be used officially. Norma Nichols, also a member of the committee said, “Back then boys didn’t wear necklaces and earrings, so a ring seemed like a good idea.”
The first CTR ring looked much like the one above? Did you know the design is technically called an "escutcheon" or a shield bearing a coat of arms?

While some updates have been made over the years, the basic CTR ring for children remains unchanged.
Coy Miles, president of a Salt Lake jewelry company, was contracted to make the first ring. The shield represents the shield of faith that protects from temptation. The iconic green color was inspired by the evergreen tree and reminds the wearer to remain true in all seasons of life
Finally, CTR stands for "Choose the Right."
