We just finished a webinar on #immigrants and the #COVID19 crisis in Massachusetts. We're going to share some of our slides now... first insight: the makeup of households that include undocumented immigrants. Only 2 in 5 are fully undocumented. Lots have U.S. citizen kids. (1/8)
An astonishing 76.4% of households reported at least one job loss. And though half of those job losses are from temporary closures, they also haven't fully come back. #immigrants #COVID19 (2/8)
Among households with undocumented members, the job loss rate was even higher: 83.9%. Loss of informal work like elder care and house-cleaning was also a bigger factor, and the gig economy has slowed, hurting many households. #immigrants #COVID19 (3/8)
A strong majority said their workplaces are trying to be #COVID19-safe, though many said they're still nervous, and almost 1/4 feel unsafe. Commuting on the @MBTA feels unsafe for many (and not all can access transit), and look at that racial harassment number! #immigrants (4/8)
#Unemployment benefits (incl. the extra $600) have been life-savers for many families. But a whopping 58% of households said at least one person who lost a job didn't get unemployment, often due to immigration status. #immigrants #COVID19 (5/8)
Sharing 3 slides together here on #COVID19 testing and #immigrants: ~2 in 5 households where someone got sick didn't get tested AT ALL, and only 3 in 10 tested the whole household. Why? Many reasons, incl. lack of access/info and yes, fear of immigration consequences. (6/8)
Why do we need the #ITIN bill and an inclusive federal #COVID19 response? Because #immigrants and their families were unjustly excluded from the CARES Act stimulus, even if they paid taxes every year. That's 1-2 months' rent payments. (7/8)
We have a serious #housing crisis in Mass. and #immigrants are in particular distress: 2/5 overall reported housing insecurity, and 3/5 of households w/ undocumented members. Boosting RAFT by $20M is great, but we need at least $50M. #COVID19 (8/8)
We have an even bigger #foodinsecurity crisis: 59% overall and 78% of households w/ undocumented members said they don't have enough food or had relied on at least one form of cash/food assistance, and that may be an underestimate! #COVID19 #immigrants (9/8 yes we know...)
Finally, #childcare. Many moms (yes, it's moms) are stuck at home with their small or school-age kids, unable to work even if they desperately need money. We need to address this problem head-on, and not just for #immigrants! #COVID19 (10/8 we're almost done...)
We'll post the video of our webinar shortly and release a full report Tuesday, including insights from the webinar and from in-depth interviews.
