Roadside Attractions! The trip was to get my stuff out of storage but we wanted to safely have fun along the way. We picked places that seemed easy to social distance. We wore masks (near people) but other people sometimes didn’t. Here’s how it went. (Mute if you hate fun)
LA - Angels Flight. I lived here for 20 years and this is the first time I’ve seen it in operation! Bradbury building was closed but you could peak through the window.
The Cabazon Dinosaurs! Perfect because you can really see all you want to see from the parking lot. It is cool to go inside the T-Rex but it requires you to give money to a creationist museum so I don’t feel too bad skipping.
Quartzsite, AZ and the Tomb of Hi Jolly. He was a camel trainer hired by the US Army to experiment with using camels instead of horses. This is mostly a winter town so not a whole lot else going on here in July.
Montezuma Castle National Monument which is actually a very incorrectly named Sinagua settlement. I remember going here as a kid and being extremely disappointed that I wasn’t allowed to play inside.
We passed Hope, AZ on the way here which has a noteable sign.
Meteor Crater! This was one of the more expensive attractions. It’s impressive but only has a few landings for viewing. Worth seeing once! – bei Meteor Crater
Winslow, AZ - Home of a famous corner for standing and the world’s smallest church (disputed). I had an much needed turkey sandwich here (see fast food thread). – bei Standin' on The Corner Park
The Contintental Divide! I don’t understand why everything after this point drains East when we are still so far west but ok! Also one of many old Route 66 “trading posts” that unfortunately weren’t open.
