Bill Brown, Vinoo Mankad & Run outs

Brown was run out for a duck without facing a ball on his First Class debut for NSW.

In the early days of their partnerships, Bradman once asked Brown if he would please call before running!

Brown's affair with running is fascinating.

India tour of Australia 1947/48

After a few draws in Perth, Adelaide & Melbourne, the Indians lost by an innings @scg to a powerful NSW.

The PAIR met for the first time at SCG, 2 weeks before 1st Test, in a match b/w Australia XI & Indians.

India made 326 (from 9-229).

Aus XI looked domineering with a 3rd wkt stand of 250+ between Bradman (172) & Miller (86), before their dismissals 4 runs apart triggered a collapse.

This match is most remembered for Bradman's 100th FC 100.

Kishenchand's twin 50s set Aus XI a target of 251 in 2½ hrs.

Aus XI were cruising at 0/60.

Mankad warned Brown about backing up too far, and when the batsman repeated this ran him out. Aus XI were bowled out for 203 under 2 hours in 30 (8-ball) overs.

Mankad took 8 for 84 to lead Indians to their 1st victory on tour, by 47 runs.

1 week before the 1st Test, Brown led QLD to victory v Indians, but he was warned by Mankad again for backing up too far. Brown was, however, out LBW to Mankad for 42.

1st Test: Brown was at non-strikers end for only 12 of Mankad's 29 deliveries during his stay at crease.

2nd Test at SCG

India made 188 on a difficult pitch. After a 25 run opening stand, Brown moved down the pitch too quickly from non-striker's end. This time Mankad gave no warning (rightly so); and whipped off the bails to run him out.

Test drawn with only 10-hrs of play.

Later, Brown said to Mankad there were no hard feelings; & Mankad replied he would never do it to Brown again.

But, cricket is a funny game!

Brown didn't play in 3rd (Mankad made his maiden Test 100) & 4th (Harvey's debut) Tests.

5th Test @MCG had quite some highlights.

[7/9]
Adhikari brilliantly ran out Barnes for 33; Bradman tore a rib muscle and retired on 57.

Batting with the wunderkind Neil Harvey, Brown was run out on 99, this time by Mankad in the field!

Harvey became (& still remains) the youngest Australian to score a Test century.

A much loved Australian and a much respected Indian great should forever be remembered for the outstanding cricket achievements on and off the field.

Much of their best was lost to WWII, but cricket was blessed that such wonderful men graced the game with their presence.
