Many of the best things in my life came via pure serendipity. Like meeting my wife, or starting a VC fund.

One insight I've had is that serendipity is proportional to your breadth, not your depth. You'll have more lucky breaks from spending 1 hr w/50 people vs 50 hrs w/1 person.
The nice thing is that all of us can increase our surface area for serendipity. Meet more people. Write more cold emails. Share your thoughts via podcasts, blog posts, or Twitter. If you have a dog, go hang out at a dog park (post-covid). You might be surprised by the results!
Also I'm not saying people shouldn't have deep relationships as well. Of course they should. But there's also a lot of unpredictable, delightful value to having a broad and shallow network.
