One of the themes of Bioshock is that unrestrained 'artistry' can be as harmful as unrestrained science or enterprise.

The other two, sure, but I've always felt that Art is harmless. There's no such thing as having too much art or 'wrong' art. (1/??)
But then I started to think about it more...

"Birth of a Nation" and "Triumph of the Will" are undoubtedly technical and artistic masterpieces. They innovated filmmaking's emotional impact. Yet the world would likely be at least one iota better had they never been made. (2/??)
Now it’s time to talk about the other side. Restrained artistry.

Today I learned of a furry with 40k followers publicly shaming an artist with 200 followers for previously drawing underaged characters. So the thing is... those things are IDENTICAL to the puritans. (7/6)
In the Cold War, we had broadcast guidelines which notoriously censored anything that wasn’t wholesome anti-communist Americana. It was the death of artistry.

We know video games don’t make killers, so why would fursonas make zoophiles or non-con/loli art make molesters? (8/6)
I believe in death of the author, but also that art has a responsibility to it. If we call Pewdiepie an artist then can we really excuse him for constantly putting out work that seems to gravitate to white supremacists?

He goes "Oops. Don't know HOW this keeps happening!"

The same goes for monuments in the USA. Many of them are cheap ass mass produced garbage for intimidation/propaganda purposes. Some are genuine art. Yet even the meritorious ones have created harm.

So I have to acknowledge that not all art needs to be made, including my own. (4/
I deal with a lot of subjects that could be interpreted in the worst way possible. It's... conflicting.

I've recently heard a theory that some fetishes (including non-con) emerge from an effort to compartmentalize & render harmless one's trauma- as a healing mechanism. (5/
I think this makes sense. It certainly might apply to me personally. Writing about hideous monsters violating youthful innocence *feels* good, when those topics used to be traumatic

I can't tell people to interpret my work in the healthiest way possible either... It's tough (6/6
