This by no means covers everything educators do each and every day. Teach them writing, reading, math, science, how be critical thinkers, also how to be financially literate and understand history. #onted #SafeSeptember 1/14
Not only the history that's in the curriculum but also what they need to unlearn and relearn about the truth of being settlers and this land we live on. Also learn and prep a new math curriculum. 2/14
Teach them life skills, how to communicate, solve problems, strategies for dealing with their anxiety, how to be organized, responsible, take initiative and work with others. 3/14
Worry about them on evenings and weekends, teach them how to be safe on the internet, teach them tech skills, teach them about oppression and how to be anti-opressive. 4/14
Create safety plans, work with behaviours teams, social workers, psychologists, resource teachers, and doctors. Make your lesson plans accessible at 5 different grade levels and teach in a way that's accessible to all those levels. 5/14
Teach them how to be artists and actors and musicians and enjoy moving their bodies. Teach them how to be good people, teach them how to move through the world with integrity, be their shoulder to cry on, be a mediator, provide them with food when they don't have it. 6/14
Make assessments open ended, give them choice, make it rich, think about all learning styles. Create resources for English Language Leaners, with minimal support, adapt your lessons, make it visual. 7/14
Make the classroom look good, facilitate friendships, advocate for them, communicate regularly with parents, create individual education plans, give students the supplies they need, but don't let them go through too much, we don't have the budget for it. 8/14
Teach them to respect others and themselves. Use one set of textbooks for 10 classes, but don't photocopy too much, it's against the law. 9/14
Now, you also will need to teach them in a crowded room, but keep them apart. Yes it will be hot and you'll wear your masks, the windows will open one inch, but don't use a fan that's dangerous. No there won't be air conditioning. 10/14
Be engaging and create rich tasks, but they must all sit alone, stay apart and not share supplies. Make sure you monitor for anyone who shows signs of being sick.
11/14
Sanitize your classroom, make sure no one has to go to the bathroom outside of their designated time, shares any food and never leaves their seat. 12/14
Also make sure they're not too affected by COVID and all the new rules and look after their mental health. I do not like to complain, and I regularly do this without thinking twice. 13/14
And I love my job. There is nothing that brings me more joy than that 'light bulb' moment. Most of the time I feel so privileged to do what I do. I also would like to think I am flexible, adaptable, and resilient, but when is it too much? Am I allowed to want to be safe? 14/14
