Lots of anxiety about sharks right now resulting in a lot of sightings being reported. Here's a reminder that not every fin you see belongs to a white shark or even a shark for that matter. The main culprit in misidentifications is the basking shark as seen in this comparison....
The fin of the Ocean Sunfish aka Mola mola is also often confused for a shark's fin. A recent and growing number of mistaken identity reports are turning out to be Grey Seals. When resting or sleeping on the surface their heads can resemble a shark fin....
Although these are the main species causing confusion there are other species of shark, like the Porbeagle, as well as marine mammals like Minke Whales and Dolphins that can also result in cases of misidentification...
I'm sharing this info for educational purposes, both the public and the officials that are now on high alert. I can't stress enough, if you see something that you're not sure about ALWAYS ERR ON THE SIDE OF CAUTION!! Report sightings to local authorities or 911 in emergencies...
