So, my thoughts on @JackWindsor, since no one asked... https://twitter.com/andy_chow/status/1288906768236441600
It's obvious that @JackWindsor is not an objective journalist. He provided partisan legislative testimony, spoke at a partisan rally, and even hung out with Larry Householder.
But it’s more complicated than that. Jack’s asked some...lengthy questions of DeWine, but he’s also made some very good points. And there is a benefit to having someone who’s a clear critic of DeWine’s policies question him about those policies.
Of course, this begs the question of whether he should be allowed to attend DeWine briefings as a reporter. And no one's willing to take that action, in part because of fear Jack will become a political martyr
It's a tough question! On the one hand, I don't think anyone wants to let agenda-driven people pass themselves off as objective reporters. But OTOH, who among us should decide who's a "legit" journalist and who's not? It's been an issue in journalism for a long time.
Like any profession, journalism has standards. One of them is not to have an agenda, so people don't confuse commentary & facts. Every reporter (every person!) has a bias, but they strive to put that bias to one side - and (more important) not have an *agenda*, which is far worse
The difference between bias and an agenda:
Bias is when you're more sympathetic to a side's arguments in your coverage (whether consciously or subconsciously).
An agenda is when you only report things that favor your point of view & scorn or don't report things that undercut it
