A plea in the SC to remove the words, 'Secular' and 'Socialist' from the Preamble of the Constitution. A process which should have been carried out right after the emergency. India by its very history is a pluralistic nation.
Pluralistic by religion, language, food, clothes! To paint the word ,' Secular' over this myriad landscape is like painting the grey over a masterpiece.
Secularism goes against the Constitution. A Constitution which has a different set of laws for different
religions. In India, the word secularism is not supposed to follow the dictionary meaning. The state is not constitutionally separated from religion. The Muslim personal law board, the hindu joint family act, the state control of temples only.
This ignominy has to corrected. A pluralistic nation, like India, needs to be free of state bias of religion for every Indian. We need the Uniform Civil Code, so that the state will not interfere in our religious activities within the law.
Our temples need to breathe.
The recent verdict about the Padmanabh temple a case study.
India is a democracy, and to its credit has sustained as one when all underdeveloped countries in South Asia have crumbled to become authoritarian regimes, some time in the past. Pakistan has never adjusted
to the democratic norm. Nepal has overthrown a well established democracy to bring in maoism. India is wearing the mantle of democracy with a passion for all that it entails.
"Socialism" is an ideology diametrically opposite to democracy. This idea does not gel with
India's pluralistic nature. The Communist parties of India never show allegiance to the country. Their leaders have expressed loyalties with the then USSR, and now China. In its 73 years since independence can one note any contribution by them towards India's growth?
Socialism is an idea that has weaned off. We need to remove this word from our Preamble. We need to embrace our culture without rancour of social stigma.
We need a Constitutional amendment!
