casual racism and discrimination against south asians: a thread
- not including south asians when talking about racism against asians. just because we have darker toned skin doesn’t mean we aren’t just as much asian as the rest.
- saying that we’re overreacting when it comes to ca. everyone is so used to idols calling us curryshitters and dotheads that once we actually call it out you think we’re being too loud about it and that we should just sit back down and let it happen.
- thinking that all pakistani people are muslim and all indian people are hindu. just like in america, everyone practices a different religion, even if one is more common than the other.
- thinking we all follow one religion and speak multiple languages. there are so many religions and languages in south asia but we’re all grouped into one category. we all aren’t indian and speak hindi and follow hinduism but i’ve seen so many people think that.
- mocking our accents. it’s not funny and it never will be. it is way different than mocking a british accent but you still compare the two to justify your racism.
- bangladeshi textile workers are not being paid by the american corporations, thus causing these workers who are paid $2 a day to start with, to lose their jobs and starve. 60% of clothes supplied in europe & america are made by these exploited workers in bangladesh
- not appreciating our melanin like you do with idols. are we too dark for your taste?
- the lgbt community existed for centuries in south asia and were treated with respect, especially the hijra community. after the british came they were surprised seeing the people not following the gender binary so they enforced extremely homophobic and transphobic colonial laws
- making fun of people who wear hijabs. just like you do with every other religion, please respect those who wear hijab is because it is part of their religious beliefs.
- history of colorism can be rooted in the discrimination against dalits aka “the untouchables” who fall at the lowest rank of the caste system. although the caste system was abolished decades ago, the effects of it are still felt in south asia and the brown diasporic communities
- thinking all south asians are indian. it’s simple geography. no, bangladesh is not part of india, sri lanka is not part of india, pakistan is not part of india. all you have to do is look at a map.
- asking us stupid questions like “do you speak hindu?”. please have some common sense and know the difference between a language, religion, and ethnicity. i am not hindi and i do not speak indian.
- making manifestation and karma stuff into trends. it’s part of our and many other cultures and for y’all to take that and make it into your cute little trend or quote or whatever is so fucking disgusting. if you want to practice manifestation, do it respectfully.
