I finished my MS and needed a break from academia to rethink my interests. I got a job I love as a data analyst and helped my friend land a job, too. If you are wanting to get a job outside research, here are some amazing skills you have that make you so qualified for great jobs!
PROBLEM-SOLVING: You are constantly seeking gaps in knowledge and discovering ways to solve problems. When you run into problems, you don& #39;t give up, you work relentlessly to figure it out.
PROJECT MANAGEMENT: You developed novel research from start to finish. You learned how to make a plan, execute it, and present it.
DATA ANALYSIS AND VISUALIZATION: You can take a chunk of data and make a story come to life from it. You can visualize the data into meaningful ways that facilitate understanding of the data.
PUBLIC SPEAKING AND PRESENTATIONS: You can give presentations to a wide variety of audiences (i.e. small groups, local community, conferences, etc.) You know how to tell a meaningful story with data.
TEACHING: You can efficiently communicate with unfamiliar audiences clearly and concisely. You can give meaningful feedback to help others succeed.
TECHNICAL WRITING: You can clearly communicate via writing (i.e. emails, grants, reports, peer-reviewed articles, memos, etc.).
SERVICE AND OUTREACH: You can find where the community needs to be uplifted and understand how this makes an impact.
COLLABORATIONS: You can collaborate with people in different positions, career stages, and disciplines.
If anyone would like me to send my resume to them to see how I got my Biology CV into a Data Analyst 1-page resume, I am happy to send it. I also have a list of interview questions I got. I hope this can help someone out there or provide hope that there are cool jobs out there
