I& #39;ve been thinking about identity politics a lot. I& #39;ve been trying to work out what the problem is with it. I& #39;ve come to the conclusion that Gove was right when he said we have had enough of experts.
We no longer want to listen to scientists about a global pandemic, if indeed we ever did.

We don& #39;t want to listen to the head of the world trade organisation about how it works instead favouring back bench MP& #39;s with a background in, who knows?
We don& #39;t want to listen to ONS when they say there is no evidence that immigration has had a negative impact on any area of life in the UK and in fact has had a positive impact in multiple areas.
We don& #39;t want to listen to scientists about the impact of climate change and the ways to combat it.

So why if I want to talk someone about being a black woman would I want to listen to someone with experience in that particular existence?
If I wanted to talk about being a gay man why would I speak to someone who is and knows what they& #39;ve experienced?

Why if I wanted to know what being Jewish in the UK was like would I speak to a Jewish person?
Why if I wanted to know what being a black person on the gay scene was like would I want to talk to a black gay person?
We clearly no longer want an informed opinion. We don& #39;t want a voice that is strengthened by experience and knowledge when I can listen to the posh fella who demonises all those people to make me feel superior in my willful ignorance.
If you don& #39;t need an informed perspective on the subject you& #39;re speaking about everyone& #39;s voice is equally important. Meaning people who have never read a book can argue with some who has a PHD about their specialised subject and somehow its given the weight.
Pay attention to those discrediting identity politics as navel gazing they& #39;re usually the most ill informed on the subjects they& #39;re speaking on. It has some problems as does everything but I& #39;d rather listen to someone with experience than someone without.
