So now that ive been reading the novel of Mo Dao Zu Shi I have a new theory which is pretty insane but I'm almost starting to believe. Lil' Apple... is Mo XuanYu. Hear me out!

First thing that I never really noticed before and didn't pay attention to. His markings match MXY's makeup. Plus their eyes are the same colour.

Second thing: they say in the novel he seems to have the personality of a human. He fights with Wei Wuxian and refuses to eat anything low quality that might degrade him. (Because in life he had enough of being force fed scraps to survive)

Third thing: despite fighting Wei Wuxian and not wanting to be with him at first he genuinely understands when Wei Wuxian feels bad about insulting Jin Ling. He actively distracts him and snaps him out of a depressive spiral.

He also tries to fight Jin Ling for a girl who gives him an apple in the book. There's something supernatural about him and I like the idea that the spell that gave WWX his body just put his soul into the closest low intelligence creature as payment.

So the cute thing about this if it is true is that MXY got his revenge and then also got to travel with his idol WWX. A cultivation journey of his own without ever having to go back to his family. It's just... as a donkey lmao

Or in the reverse... he summoned Wei Wuxian and just wanted to live the rest of his life as a donkey at his same old shack he'd always lived at. But now he's stuck with Wei Wuxian as retribution xD.
