Did you know that of the ~141 people who have served in Washington's 9 statewide public offices...

- Only 2 have been people of color, including @GovGaryLocke and @cyrushabib?
- 0 have been Black or Latinx
- 14 have been women
- And (shocker) 0 have been women of color #waelex
Even more "shocking", there are only two women of color that I am aware of on the ballot for statewide offices this election, zero Asian women, and zero Black women.
What's upsetting about this to me is that, in my opinion, part of dismantling white supremacy is being aware of power imbalances and doing your part to correct those imbalances.
If you are someone who wields a disproportionate amount of power (and/or wealth) you are responsible for redistributing that accordingly.... if you claim to be "committed to racial justice" anyway...
Yet so many in political office (and running for it) continue to say that they are going to "use their power" to "help" communities who need it most. They cannot fathom what it would mean to actually step aside.
Like the number of White men who have literally accomplished nothing running for office (while saying they will "help Washington's most vulnerable communities") is just astounding to me.
It's also worth noting that the Governor has the power to appoint people to the "Executive Cabinet," which includes heads of major departments in our state. Of the 24 people @JayInslee has appointed, 21 of them are White. And 7/8 people on his executive team are White.
Just want to end this by saying... I know so many brilliant women of color and trans and non-binary leaders. We have to do better at asking them to run for office.
*also this should say out of 134, not 141. Counting is weird with some people holding office at multiple times. But I think one person still counts as one person, even if their term was split up. Here's an image. Purple squares are POC, yellow squares are (white) women.
