let’s talk about aave
aave/bev as “african” “american” vernacular “english”, as black english vernacular. specific dialects or habits of speaking the genocidal language of english, as constructed by, produced by and distinguished by black people — particularly by those descendant of slaves
you all know what it is and yet every single day people are misusing it or using it against or in spite of black people asking them not to. what is the issue here, and how do we articulate it?
black vernacular is a complex and fluid language that is understood by black folx because we grow up learning it /and being demeaned for it/. our parents parents speak some form of bv, our friends and family do. no nonblack has ever grown up immersed in bv
many fools themselves into believing they have. their friends spoke it, their parents, their coworkers, their nonblack and black partners and everyone was okay with it so it’s always been okay for them to speak bv. for y’all to speak bv
this “argument” appears sound to those who have not the slightest understanding of power dynamics in a slave state, or even in a capitalist imperialist state. black people cannot “be okay” with what their masters do and steal. and other masters cannot grant the “right” to harm
the theft of bv is simply that; a violent ownership over the black and its productions. all of your nonblack friends who “grew up” speaking bv are lying. their friends are lying. their black “enablers” do not possess the consent valuation to impart a pass even as they want to
bc the black exists as property. the broom cannot allow you to use it, to sweep with it, to peel its bristles off one by one and make a strawman. even if it could speak, and even if it’s language could be understood by its master, it’s wielder, the decider of its fate
everything black people do and produce is owned by every nonblack. if all black people came together and said “stop using our language that you demeaned us for, killed us over” (and yes, denial of income is murder), that wouldn’t mean shit to the vast majourity of nonblacks
they wouldn’t stop because they don’t have to. no one has to honour the slave. there are no repercussions to refusal of the slave’s requests, assertions, or demands. most often, the slave faces repercussions, violence, for daring to speak out of turn and insult its masters
in regards to bv; a nonblack claims they grew up with it, it’s inseparable from their childhood environment — or a slave says so in defense of its master. this is a lie. all nonblack people who speak bv heard it from a black person or from someone else who did
clock rounds twelve. it /always/ begins with the slave and with a nonblack deciphering this nonhuman verbal message, like kids meowing like cats. how do you imagine humans ended up with the term “meow”? it was not be way of consent from the cats. humans didn’t “grow up” meowing
they learned it from another human’s interpretation of the cats around them. no nonblack has ever grown up learning bv, they grew up learning that all humans derive pleasure from mining the black body and taking its nonhuman verbal messages to cosplay, pose in scene of blackness
they learn it by directly stealing it from a black mouth, or by hearing about the black langauge from another nonblack. they think it’s okay to do bc the other masters said so, or did their slaves. bc they don’t understand or feign misunderstanding of slave ontology
they put on a blackface and cosplay the dead, for fun. they don’t speak that way in front of their parents lovers or employers unless their parents lovers or employers also put on a blackface and cosplay the dead, for fun.
the sense of ownership over the black and its productions means that black language and black language alone is the property of the community in a childhood and adult environment. no one says that it’s okay to butcher daily spanish, tagalog, korean bc they “grew up around it”
these are human languages (we won’t go into blackness as integral to these cultures here) and have human boundaries of acknowledgment — only koreans have authority over korean. only nonblack spanish speakers have authority over spanish. who has authority over bv? not slaves
every time a nonblack is told not to use bv, they simply tell the slave to return to its quarters. they tell the slave, “you’re mistaken, i actually have ownership over your language because i own you”. let not the flowery apologism deflect their intent in their language
nonblack people do not understand bv and this much is beyond clear to black people. we regularly decommission words and phrases when nonblacks get on their Santa Maria’s and seek more islands where we speak freely, to mine us for the imag/o/inative gold in our blood
and we can’t do anything about it. or, before someone misnomers me as defeatist, anything we do will be met with some range of violence. ranging from ignoring us to canceling us to doxxing us to killing us. any resistance to slavery we put up is met with force to maintain slavery
this is a concerted effort. no black theft of bv is a concerted effort. nonblack “apologies” when called out are a concerted effort. they want us to understand that /everything/ down to the sounds our mouths make, is owned by them. we are property and we cannot own
not our bodies, not our minds, not our language. we are in a state of total ownership. and we will continue to be while the regime of Humanity stands. while niggas aren’t on the warpath.
