thinking that they're prrrobably some sort of princex that got passed over for the throne bc they're magicless in a world where more or less everyone possesses magic. so they get creative about it.

they accidentally rip open a way to the realm of darkness and "discover" heartless (notably, the earth, fire, and water cores). eventually they figure out how the crush them into materia like gems that they can use to wield their power at their whim via "merging" with them

unfortunately this has the side effect of slow corruption by the darkness but thats fine
