Thread: Judges 17:13 is such a fascinating verse. Micah demonstrates that he knows the Law well enough to know that priests should be from Levi, yet he brings in this priest to support totally idolatrous practice. So we conclude one of two things.
Either he only knew a small amount of the Law and was ignorant of the rest (possible, but less likely), or he had determined to set his own standard and hoped that by paying lip-service to what the Law commands, God would bless it (this seems more likely based on the text).
It makes me think of how often churches do this same thing. They develop a man-centered vision, then bathe it in enough of the trappings of Christianity to make themselves believe they’re worshipping truly, while pursuing their own desires.
So beware: just because a church does certain things biblically, that doesn’t mean that they are biblical at their core. Look at the foundation first and foremost. Do they want to be faithful to God or do they want God to give them what they want?
One thing is clear: God is not going to be used as a means to get what we want. He is the goal. He is the treasure. We pursue him the way he says to or we do not pursue him at all.
