Like most of society’s ills, evictions hit black and brown New Yorkers the hardest. h/t @OksanaMironov @CSSNYorg
Housing security was at crisis levels pre-COVID. The pandemic has only exacerbated the challenge and threatens to imperil the health and safety of thousands. https://www.politico.com/states/new-york/city-hall/story/2020/06/29/new-york-is-facing-a-potential-explosion-in-homelessness-1296100">https://www.politico.com/states/ne...
Despite this reality, landlords are insisting on evicting vulnerable tenants. They are actively suing to lift eviction moratoriums. https://therealdeal.com/2020/07/21/from-la-to-nyc-landlords-are-suing-to-resume-evictions/">https://therealdeal.com/2020/07/2...
“We have bills too.” Yes, we’re aware. Some relief is warranted in that space. But evicting tenants will not pay your bills nor will it get you another paying tenant. Everybody is struggling.
Actually, not everyone. Private Equity is doing fabulous. And they have their eyes (and hands) on the housing market. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/04/magazine/wall-street-landlords.html">https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/0...
Renters cannot pay and “small” landlords with distressed buildings are the targets of private equity firms looking for cheap buys and quick returns. https://www.bloombergquint.com/businessweek/coronavirus-moves-nyc-affordable-housing-crisis-to-breaking-point">https://www.bloombergquint.com/businessw...
Mass evictions + private equity buyouts = an unrecognizable city for rich people only. It doesn’t have to be this way.
@KarinesReyesNYC and I have a bill that would stop evictions for a year after the state of emergency is over. https://therealdeal.com/2020/07/07/bill-to-nix-evictions-for-a-year-after-covid-19-ends/">https://therealdeal.com/2020/07/0...

The Emergency Housing Stability and Displacement Act would prevent the issuing, filing, or execution of a warrant for eviction for any residential or commercial property.
It would also prevent the foreclosure or sale of owner-occupied property. https://www.nysenate.gov//legislation/bills/2019/S8667">https://www.nysenate.gov//legislat...

And while current moratoriums have prevented most evictions, courts are still issuing monetary judgments for rent arrears — a disaster for tenant’s credit reports and ability to build wealth. Our bill clarifies that money judgments are prohibited as well. https://ny.curbed.com/2020/7/10/21318089/new-york-city-eviction-tenant-landlord-housing-court">https://ny.curbed.com/2020/7/10...
The rent laws we passed last year went a long way in keeping many New Yorkers in their homes during this crisis. But COVID-19 has brought us all to the edge of the cliff and if we do not act, we will lose the fabric of the city forever. Fight with us to get this bill passed!
