Like most of society’s ills, evictions hit black and brown New Yorkers the hardest. h/t @OksanaMironov @CSSNYorg
“We have bills too.” Yes, we’re aware. Some relief is warranted in that space. But evicting tenants will not pay your bills nor will it get you another paying tenant. Everybody is struggling.
The Emergency Housing Stability and Displacement Act would prevent the issuing, filing, or execution of a warrant for eviction for any residential or commercial property.

It would also prevent the foreclosure or sale of owner-occupied property. https://www.nysenate.gov//legislation/bills/2019/S8667
And while current moratoriums have prevented most evictions, courts are still issuing monetary judgments for rent arrears — a disaster for tenant’s credit reports and ability to build wealth. Our bill clarifies that money judgments are prohibited as well. https://ny.curbed.com/2020/7/10/21318089/new-york-city-eviction-tenant-landlord-housing-court
The rent laws we passed last year went a long way in keeping many New Yorkers in their homes during this crisis. But COVID-19 has brought us all to the edge of the cliff and if we do not act, we will lose the fabric of the city forever. Fight with us to get this bill passed!
