why LOOΠΔ’s name is so brilliant - an updated thread for orbits and curious non-orbits alike!
i made a thread on this in 2017 and it occasionally gets positive attention to this day, so i decided to remake it more clear and with new information!!
i have no sources, i know things ever since we found out, and some things i interpeted myself (but i’m probably not 1st!)

let’s start off with the obvious. a big theme in loona’s concept, lore and lyrics is the moon. “luna” is a well-known word of latin origin that means “moon” in spanish, italian, romanian, russian and bulgarian. “luna” sounds very similar to “loona”.
so why not “luna”? a cute detail is that there are two “o” in “loona”, just like in “moon”.
but much cooler, loona’s korean name is 이달의 소녀 (syllables: 이 달 의 소 녀). the first character in each syllable makes ㅇㄷㅇㅅㄴ, which can be rearranged to ㄴㅇㅇㄷㅅ aka LOOΠΔ.

this is, however, not the only reason it’s LOOΠΔ rather than just LOONA. Π and Δ are the greek letters representing P and D.
this means loona’s stylized name spells out LOOPD, which would be read as LOOPED. any orbit familiar with loona’s lore will know, that the loonaverse is a loop. LOOΠΔ are LOOPED.
back to the korean name. 이달의 소녀, meaning “girl of the month”. this represents how the members of loona were revealed one by one every month through “who’s next girl?” teasers, kind of saying “who’s the girl of this month?”. “이달” directly translates to “this month”.
that’s why loona are “girl of the month”. a girl for all 12 months.
“이 달” means “this moon”, so loona’s name said out loud sounds both like “girl of the month” AND “girl of the moon” which is fitting, considering there will be no more “who’s next girl” teasers every month, but loona will always be the moon.
1/3
- in loona’s name there’s actually a “/“ as seen in the logo.
- sometimes 1/3’s name was stylized with a “Δ” instead of a “/“.
- this means both the “Δ” (“ㅅ”) AND the “/“ from “LOOΠΔ/“ aka “ㄴㅇㅇㄷㅅ/“ is used in the sub-unit’s name.

ODD EYE CIRCLE
- the “ODD” is often stylized as three circles hiding behind each other, representing the “OO”/“ㅇㅇ” from the name.
- what brings OEC together is their ODD eyes. the three circles in ODD eye circle are moons. the odd eyes are all in the shape of moons.

YYXY
- 1/3 using the “/“ and “Δ”, and OEC using the “ㅇㅇ”, the only characters remaining from “ㄴㅇㅇㄷㅅ” are “ㄴ” & “ㄷ”.
- YYXY are in eden, and pre-debut we thought their name would be “eden”. then, the “ㄷ” (d in korean) and “ㄴ” (n in korean) from ㄴㅇㅇㄷㅅ would be used.

a fun fact about YYXY’s name is that it’s pronounced “why why by why”. if we say every X in the loonaverse should be pronounced as “by”, loona’s album “XX” would be pronounced “bye bye”. this is cool, because the title track of the album before that is “hi high”.
this makes the track list of XX better: starting with “bye bye”, ending with “hi high”. bc the loonaverse is mirrored.
loona’s fans are called orbits. but what about the name orbit?
well, if loona are the moon (luna), that would make us the orbit of the moon - the fans of loona! we humans have the moon because it orbits around the earth - its orbit is important. sweet, right?
there’s also another way i like to interpret it!

in astronomy, a “lunar orbit” refers to the orbit of an OBJECT AROUND THE MOON, NOT the orbit of the moon around the earth. if we orbits are not the orbit of luna, but rather the lunar orbit, it means we are orbiting loona. the fanclub “orbit” does revolve around loona, right?
in korean, “orbit” is written as “오빛” (obit). “빛” in korean means “light”, so the fandom name cutely means “oh light” in korean! and since “오” looks like it could represent the moon, the name also means “moonlight”.
loona are the moon, and we’re their light. the moon shines because of its light, but moonlight wouldn’t exist without the moon.
loona shines with the help of orbits, but orbits would have nobody to shine with without loona.

again, not sure what in this thread has been proven canon or not, but these are my interpretations and others’ interpretations that i think are likely!!
