According to Chinese pilgrim Song Yun (c.6th century CE), people of Punjab in his time worshiped Indra as their prime deity.

While Indra worship has completely declined in Punjab, it still explains preponderance of names like Harminder, Harinder, Satinder, Rajinder, Mahinder etc
The worship of Indra as a prime deity must have been strong in the Northwest. We know the Rgveda extols Indra

To this day, the Kalash tribes of Hindu Kush in extreme Northwest(today's Chitral in Pakistan) worship Indra as their God.

He is worshiped by the name Indr and Varendr
The "Indar" names are quite popular not just in Punjab but also in Haryana/Himachal.

An image of Nuristani Indra on his horse

Nuristanis worshiped Indra until their forced conversion in 1895(note that Indra is depicted on a horse which is known as Uccaiḥśravas in Mahabharata)
