Have you seen the awful article published last week, by an Oxbridge senior lecturer in classics, which argues that racism doesn't exist in the discipline and that attempts to decolonise classics should be stopped? It's utter trash, and I've written a blog post explaining why. 1/6
I want to preface my post by saying that I am only one individual, and although I don't say this too much in the post (because it would make for very convoluted prose), let me make it clear that I do not speak for all POC or otherwise marginalised classicists. 2/6
This blog post (part 2 of this week's reflections) tells #ClassicsTwitter the bare minimum of what I personally think you need to do, if you want to even begin to stop being complicit in the racism of the discipline. Baby steps. 4/6 http://mixedupinclassics.wordpress.com/reflections-call-to-action/
Please share these posts widely, and have uncomfortable conversations with your white colleagues. Next week I will write a post collating recent articles on anti-racism in education, and review Layla Saad's "Me and White Supremacy", for when you are ready to learn / do more. 5/6
I'm grateful to the friends who read and commented on earlier drafts of these posts, who reminded me that my emotions are valid and (at my request) helped me to dial back aspects that readers might have found unpalatable. Even in this piece, I've had to police my own tone. 6/6
