back to this, i don't understand the purpose of this documentary, in terms of how it will benefit the mass trans+ community in any way,
or who it's aimed at with target audience,
(1/?) https://twitter.com/Layilith/status/1287118708285100034
to me, all it seemed to do was highlight how much negativity there is surrounding trans women within recent historical, and present day fiction media
and how similar attitudes have been there for depictions of trans men too,
though i feel it was primarily showing trans women (2/?
non binary and generally gnc people were almost completely overlooked apart from a few mentions here & there,
and while i get that there hasn't been nearly as many depictions of NB/gnc people in media comparatively to trans women/men, with trans women clearly having the most (3/?
plus the psychopathic crossdressing man being strongly linked to trans women within media,
both due to many people thinking that that is all trans women are, and media depicting us as such on such a mass basis.
and i get that its good to explore where these portrayals have.. 4/?
come from and why they're used so much, and the documentary is clear that these such portrayals are nothing but harmful to the lives of trans people,
it did nothing to explore positive portrayals of trans people within media, leaving the viewers to think that these harmful.. 5/?
stereotypes are all trans people have ever been in media, and all we will ever be in media.
and the sheer amount of transphobia that trans actors/actresses were exposed to both passively and deliberately due to these roles is enough to cast doubts in anyone's mind about whether..
we'll ever get positive and accurate depictions of ourselves in mass media, which we need
we need the positive depictions to remove so many of the harm and negativity that has been cast on the community for so many years.
and the documentary said these such things... 7/?
and showed many examples of trans people being interviewed and being asked personal invasive questions, which has stemmed from all the negative depictions in media, and having cis people think they're entitled to us having to explain ourselves and why we are who we are...
when in fact we're just people, we just want to live our lives, we don't want this prejudice to be the norm for us,
and also the norm for us isn't these highly beautiful and successful trans men and women, the fact that these people have managed to achieve what they have...
is such an anomaly within the larger picture of society,
and while it's great that they have managed what they have, and gotten into all kinds of successful positions and jobs, it's harmful to make out as though all trans people can, or should be striving for this because life..
is full of so many hurdles that we will encounter in every aspect of existence
and i feel the documentary would have greatly benefited to have shown trans men and women and NB's who aren't huge celebrities, trans people who haven't got mass amounts of wealth to be able to use...
as a tool within their transition to get what they need to "pass"
a term that i hate because it implies people who don't pass aren't as valid as those who do,
but when documentaries like this only show real trans people who do pass, who are beautiful women and handsome men...
it's massively damaging to trans people who feel that they don't 'pass', and makes us feel like unless we do, we don't deserve to be recognised or admired despite us just living our lives like the rest of everyone
tldr: the documentary did good to explore negative portrayals of trans people in media but offered almost nothing in return with positive portrayals,
and while it's great to show so many well off trans people, it just furthers the harmful narrative that unless we're like them...
, unless we pass beautifully, unless we're successful, and have the internal strength to stand up for ourselves when faced with prejudice,
that we don't matter as much as those who do, that our struggles shouldn't be considered, despite how at risk our lives are...
to me this is a documentary aimed at cis people to show:
trans people have been demonised in media and its bad,
but look at all these beautiful trans people who are so clearly out and living as the gender they ID as, so life for trans people caaan't be as bad as it used to be...
