I have been driving a lot this weekend. So I know we have an obesity strategy being published tomorrow and I also *know* that if the tone of the reporting so far is anything to go by, that it isn’t going to help. Because if #fatshaming worked we would all be thin now. A 🧵
I am no expert except of my own experience & a lifetime of living in a culture that focuses on how are body looks not our wellbeing. I am heavier than I was at the beginning of lockdown. Probably about 10kgs heavier. Although well intentioned folk say I don’t look it
We need people like @FitterYouGlobal & @smashlondon_ who really understand the links between mental and physical wellbeing advising government if another ‘obesity’ initiative isn’t going to fail to protect, promote & support wellbeing.
And finally a strategy must not be centred on a discourse of privilege, blinkered inequalities & the experiences of people with eating disorders that ignores our boozey culture & does not adequately take into account the lifestyle shifts our new working patterns create.
We don’t need to be told to be thin. We do need a discourse that helps think about habits & practises that restore balance & wellbeing. We need praise for adapting to the world being turned on its head & a collective drive that builds the wellbeing of the nation
