I have been asked to join the 48 hour Twitter walkout to protest Twitter not applying its hate speech rules consistently to antisemitism. #NoSafeSpaceForJewHate
I am sympathetic to those rightly pointing out & objecting to the rise of antisemitism, but I must decline.
The reason for this is the same as the one I have given to campaigns to expand hate speech laws to racism against white people.
While I recognise the inconsistency of the current application of hate speech laws & rules & have devoted myself full-time to breaking down & opposing the underlying ideology that produces this rejection of consistent liberal principles in favour of identity politics...
...I do not believe that hate speech laws should exist at all & disagree strongly with beliefs that we can best beat terrible ideas by banning or punishing the expression of them. Although hate speech rules are not applied consistently, liberal responses to them should be.
The best liberal defence of the marketplace of ideas approach for defeating bad ideas and one that specifically looks at antisemitism is Jonathan Rauch's Kindly Inquisitors.
Rather than trying to shut down hateful antisemitic speech, let's show the rise of it and its increasing social acceptability and make arguments for why we should be extremely worried about this. This is much more likely to raise awareness and opposition to it.
Here is an excellent example of how to do this, published at @AreoMagazine. https://twitter.com/PornPanic/status/1287021050681753602
