The global efforts on producing an effective vaccine to fight against #COVID19 since the pandemic outbreak are already being translated into results in #clinicaltrials. This week we talked about the #OxfordVaccine, but at which stage is the mRNA Moderna’s vaccine?
(A quick reminder that you can learn how this mRNA vaccine acts in our body by checking out our thread: https://twitter.com/VacciBate/status/1260598086314975232)
2 months ago, we explained you the very first preliminary results obtained in #phase1 #clinicaltrials that were published in a press release made by the company and that you can check in this thread: https://twitter.com/VacciBate/status/1263867120779132928
In mid-July, the interim results of this first phase were published in the @NEJM. They used 45 participants which were divided into 3 groups depending on the dose injected in the two consecutive vaccinations. But what do the results tell us of its efficacy? 🧐
At higher doses, the neutralizing antibody responses and the systemic adverse events were higher and more frequent, respectively. Also, antibody neutralizing activity was low before the second vaccination. This means that

Of the 3 doses evaluated, the intermediate one gives a high neutralization response with a profile of secondary effects more favorable than the highest dose injected. The second vaccination seems to be crucial to keep a high titer of neutralizing antibodies. And now
what?
Since it seems that mild illnesses do not generate long-term immunity
the blood of these participants is going to be collected at different timepoints throughout 1 year to keep an eye on the humoral and cellular immunologic responses.
A #phase2 #clinicaltrial using the intermediate dose and the lower one with a total of 600 participants is already ongoing and the #phase3 is expected to start during this Summer.
We will continue keeping you updated with all the results of these progressions. We are willing to listen to any concern that may pop up in your minds! Feel absolutely free to comment and share it :)
