In the first year of my life Leicester City won the 2nd Division. The following season they were relegated. And so it began. As I grew old enough to remember it we continued to flit between the top two divisions in front of average crowds of 15,000 or so.
The promotion seasons under Little, O'Neill, Adams and Pearson were great. First through exciting trips to Wembley play-off finals then a 2nd place and eventually a title (via the third tier) to cherish. Our place was a top second tier club who would then scrap at the top table.
All that obviously changed in 2016. While it was billed as a freak, a 5,000/1 shot, it wasn't an accident. Khun Vichai had been ridiculed when we were promoted in 2014 for saying we'd be a top five club within three years. Finishing 1st was beyond even his wild dreams I suspect.
But six years later, we are a top five club again. People still talk about "the big six" but in two of the past five seasons we're spoiling the party. Over 37 games (recency bias over the post-pandemic form removed) this side have played some of the best football I've seen.
After 2016 I felt we'd completed it. Nothing more we could achieve. The CL run was the cherry on the top. But this is great. We are dining at the top table again, albeit not at the head of the table. We'll be in Europe next season in one form or another. More memories to make.
We are heading into the last day of the season playing the biggest club in the country with a chance to nick a Champions League spot from under their nose. If we do it we can go bananas, if we don't it's been an amazing season, I hope supporters appreciate the effort.
One last day on the rollercoaster, we could lose 5-0, we could win 3-0. One thing I hope there will be is chaos, it's the way we do it. Come on Leicester. #WeAreLeicester #lcfc 🦊💙
