🧵The Resurgence Of Roach🧵
My first memory🧠of K Roach was watching him bowl a searing yorker which broke Sibanda’s bat in half💔 and still went on to hit the off stump🎯. Such was the amount of pace🚀 & excitement🤪he was able to generate consistently with his skiddy action.
⚡️Early Days⚡️
In his 1st season in int'l cricket he troubled the best of the best with his pace🚀. He made Ponting spend his bday🎂night in a hyperbaric chamber🏥 & also hit Smith and Kallis on the helmet🪖 within a span of 4 overs. An IPL contract & a WC hattrick🎩followed too.
⚡️The Breakdown⚡️
After a promising start to his career, injuries🤕started to peg him back. The car crash🚗 incident at Barbados affected him a lot mentally. He managed s meagre 9 wickets from the next 8 tests in 2015 & was subsequently dropped. Roach was at an all time low😫
With the help of his childhood👶coach P Vaughn, Roach started to get back on his feet. They primarily worked on his fitness🏋️‍♂️to get him into a good frame of mind. Once that was accomplished, they moved on to make some technical changes💯 & most importantly his approach to bowling
⚡️Technical Changes⚡️
After analysing his bowling clips📽️from 2015 they found that Roach tended to fall away in his bowling action making his wrist position go awry compromising on both pace🚀and movement🌈. Also he leapt🐎a little more in his jump before the pre delivery stride.
We can infer from the 1st pic🖼️how his head, body & wrist are off balance⚖️compared to the 2nd pic from 2019. This change enabled proper transfer of energy & helped him with his control🎛️& movement. He also cut✂️down his pace and started to rely more on control & subtle skills.
Vaughn fed a lot of stories📔to Roach about how M Marshall used to decimate the opposition with his craft more than his pace🚀. Inspired by these stories, Roach adopted the old but effective method of making the batsman play🏏. This approach helped him to be more consistent.
⚡️The Comeback⚡️
In 2017, Roach was recalled🤙🏿to the side after an impactful domestic 4⃣day competition. In his comeback series against🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿, he got into the Lord's honours board & got a 4fer in a memorable Leeds win🏆. He then became a potent force🔥in home conditions with (cont)
the usage of Dukes🎾and the pitches catered to assist the pacers which suited🕴️‍♂️his new found method. Since his comeback, he has picked up 79 wickets from 22 tests at a healthy🩺average of 22.89. At 31, he is primed for a lot more accolades👏& achievements🏆.
