I am so fucking tired right now. The Seattle protests started as thousands of people peacefully protesting for hours, no police. I don't know what happened at the youth jail construction site, and I'm sure some people caused some property damage somewhere.
But most people were just marching and chanting. And then, the SPD started throwing explosives and chemical irritants into the crowd. And then we were in this whole other urban warfare situation. I spent hours out there as the line went back and forth.
And I tried to hold the line because if we didn't hold the line, it would make their tactics look effective, and justify them. And if we didn't hold the line, they could isolate our people and beat them and arrest them and even kill them.
And then I left, because I was tired and hungry and didn't know what I was doing, and because my mom is working in the middle of a COVID ward in South Texas, and Hurricane Hanna shut off their power, and she called and begged me to stay safe on the worst day of her life.
And so I left, and people who are more able and more experienced and more dedicated stayed, and they have now been traumatized and injured and arrested for standing up to the police. Not the Feds or "Trump" (evil as those forces are), but our good old local police force.
And you know what? I do not care about the property damage, if I ever did. As long as no one was hurt, it means nothing compared to the fact that the SPD just waited for a pretense to come in and terrorize the protesters today, and fought us with explosives and chemical weapons.
So if you sometimes see #SeattleRiots trending on twitter instead of #SeattleProtests, that's why. It's a bunch of assholes who either don't know the facts, or have no perspective.
And if anyone says that this "violence" justifies the feds coming in, consider this. This protest wouldn't have been half the size it was, if not for what happened in Portland. Those DHS agents are not scaring us away, they are recruiting people to our cause.
Oh, and since I've been talking about the protests, I would be remiss if I didn't talk about #BlackLivesMatter . America is built on white supremacy, and the police are one of the main vehicles of that cause.
The police, most everywhere in America, are an ineffective institution for solving crime, and they especially do not serve Black people, but police departments are intimately tied with white supremacy and anti-Black sentiments.
For me, the main issues I "normally" attend to are climate change, and immigrant issues. But we're all in this together now. And the oppression of Black people needs to be dealt with now.
