On July 25th, 1934 Dollfuss was assassinated. As he lay dying he said "I never wanted anything other than peace. We were never the aggressors. We were always forced to defend ourselves. May God forgive them."
He is remembered, inaccurately, as a fascist dictator. Whatever title one gives him his desire was clear: to keep Austria a part of Christendom, and from the twin vultures of Nazism and Communism. His authoritarian actions were vindicated, in 1938 Austria was annexed by Hitler.
