Women share only 98.5 percent of their genetic makeup with men. That’s 15 times greater than the difference between any two human males, who are about as genetically similar to a male chimpanzee as to a human female. Yet people claim there is no difference between the sexes.
Having XX or XY is not the only genetic difference between females and males. Our non-sex chromosomes are identical, but they are expressed differently in females & males bc of our sex chromosomes, just as the entirety of the genome is expressed differently in females & males.
It’s not just the reproductive organs that are different between the sexes—there are intrinsic biochemical differences between XX and XY cells that affect tissues and organs across the entire body and have a significant impact independent of sex hormones.
By pretending there is no difference, you jeopardize the health of women & stifle science that suggests otherwise. Physicians must understand the biological differences between the sexes in order to properly treat their patients.
90% of those with lupus are women. Dilated cardiomyopathy kills men 10 years earlier than women. There are 3x more women than men with rheumatoid arthritis. Men are more likely to die from COVID. Sex is real, there is a huge difference, and it matters.
It is necessary to acknowledge biological sex and try to understand how disease processes differ between the sexes. If physicians are discouraged from exploring the differences, lives will be put in danger.
As Dr. Page, biology professor at MIT, put it: “Imagine if you’re going to surgery and your surgeon has never been instructed in the anatomical differences between men and women,” he said. “Would you sign the consent form?” The same idea applies to disease treatment.
Acknowledging the biological difference in sex doesn’t reduce women to just their reproductive organs bc it’s not just our ovaries or uteri that are different—every cell in our bodies is intrinsically female. Cross-sex hormones cannot change this.
We don’t even fully understand the extent to which XX and XY chromosomes change our biology. This idea that it’s offensive to point out biological sex is dangerous and harmful to both women and men. If science offends you, you have a problem, not the scientists.
