THREAD: Networking Do's and Dont's for #PreWGA

1/8
So @ScriptsByJames has a thread on this that is phenomenal, but I feel a need for the #prewga community to address this a bit.

I've gotten where I am through networking, virtual and in person. As of rn, we can't do in person, so I'll just address the online (twitter) part

You always want to make sure you read a whole post of someone offering something. Make sure you fit the qualifications before you comment/DM.

We are all hungry and I've certainly been in that position where I'm like, WHATEVER I'LL SHOOT MY SHOT.

You have to have moxie. Moxie is good. But, it is equally important to show respect for someone's time and realize that they are busy too. The people who make me personally want to respond or do things for are the people who recognize this.

This is a straight-up repeat from @ScriptsByJames. Unless someone asks to read you, don't send them your script. This is a business built on relationships and you're building one with everyone you come into contact with.

Focus on building relationships with people at your level. You will grow together and be able to help each other down the line, not because you owe it to each other but because you genuinely want to.

I am not immune to making faux pas in this regard. I've learned from my past mistakes. But, I'll tell you now, being kind and respectful earns you so many points from the people you admire.

Paraphrasing @lizsczudlo's brilliance at one of our @PrewgaLadies panels.

"We can rewrite your shitty script but not your shitty personality."

Showrunners want to staff people they like, that they feel they can spend a whole day in a room with. Be kind. Goes a long way.
