As I close out my first month (!) of being a doctor, I’ve been mulling about #MedBikini and my role in medicine/surgery. Let’s all agree on something right now: “professionalism” in medicine is a loaded term. 1/x
It comes with the baggage of stereotypes, perceptions, prejudice, and assumptions. It maintains the status quo of who “belongs” in medicine. It closes the door to those who see a pathway towards being a doctor… 2/x
…yet, we put SO much weight on it when we consider training: for med students, residents, and fellows. 3/x
The article is over a year old, in fact. The thought process dates back to even before I wanted to BECOME a doctor. It’s not a vascular surgery problem, either. It’s a MEDICINE problem. 5/x https://twitter.com/heathsweensMD/status/1286937216518774784?s=20
Please, let us in medicine do a better job of working ACTIVELY towards a culture of inclusivity. If not, we risk having the same faces that grace the walls of many a hospital, including my own, being the only faces we continue to see grace the halls of many a hospital. 6/x
