A thread (includes places to donate at the end):

#BlackLivesMatter #Portland
Please organize or plug in where you are.
Portland is finally in the news because the DHS and other federal officers came to town. However, Portland Police were brutalizing protestors long before the Feds arrived.
Our mayor was tear gassed the other night, and is on the news decrying the unchecked violence of the Feds. Mayor Wheeler is also Portland’s police commissioner. His police force has been gassing people, shooting “less lethals” at heads and bodies,
and arresting people nightly for close to 60 days, but the truth is, this has been going on under his watch for four years.
Mayor Wheeler recently stood on a platform and said “Black Lives Matter.” However, his police force killed 17 year old Quanice Hayes as he crawled on the ground as per police orders.
This is not just about the Federal officers. Not just about DHS or ICE. This is also firmly about local police.
The bulk of police calls in Portland are “nuisance” or mental health related. Robbery—and all the rest—are a tiny percentage of calls. I bet it is the same where you live.
So here are some things you can do:
Check your city budget. Ask for a clear accounting. You fund the city. You pay the police.
Make demands that your local government fund real community care—mental health, housing, rape crisis, child care, clean water—instead of punishment and prisons.
If you think Black Lives Matter, working locally is the thing that most needs to be done.
Plug into mutual aid systems: make lunches. Share produce from your garden. Share labor. Make phone calls. Do what you can.
Learn about abolition and why so many people say now is the time.
And if you think your city or town is also at risk for invasion by the Federal government, start training together.
Form an affinity group.
Decide what your affinity group wants to do on the ground. Front line work? Supplies and support? Medical?
Start gathering protective gear: industrial filter masks, sealed work goggles, helmets etc.
Stay strong.
Stay creative.
Stay in love.

Remember, we act out of love, in order to lift each other up. Let’s not just resist. Let’s build.
To help Portland more directly, some current needs are for protective gear, and to fund medics, and on the ground supply lines:
