I’m getting really annoyed and tired how many white people I follow on Facebook are suddenly screaming about human trafficking and O.U.R. when during May and June they were absolutely silent about MMIW who frequently talked about this issue.
Also, how icky it feels how in the midst of a civil rights movement where marginalized people have brought this up for DECADES while in a global pandemic, yt people are sharing graphs like “I wish people were talking about this as much as BLM”.
And I get many of them are well intentioned, but it also smacks of privilege and what issues they choose to focus on and be impacted be.

Especially when last month when multiple BIPOC brought up this issue alongside other systemic oppression and they were absolutely silent.
Plus how “white savior” esque O.U.R. feels at times, it just rubs me the wrong way.
“We need to be talking about human trafficking & child pornography epedemic in America” and

“we need to be talking about the systemic oppression of marginalized communities of color in America”

are two statements that can and should be held and said simultaneously.
Also because much of the intersecting oppression of the former daily feeds into the other, targeting systemic oppression to create a society and justice system built on equality will actually help us allocate funds into organizations to best help victims and end trafficking.
Mostly, I’m just frustrated because the frameing and marketing of so many of these posts makes this seem like we’re ignoring this issue in favor of BLM, when in reality its been an issue for centuries but only recently has white social media been caring about it.
And instead of framing social media posts on human trafficking as an issue separate from the current civil rights movement, we must see them as simultaneous issues that speak to gross inequality and violence in our society.
