Driving to Sand Island to help move canoes from shore to parking lot ahead of potential storm, I heard some dude on the radio (normally a Top 40 station) mock the idea of telling a single mom to rely on a "community." She needed to know she could only rely on herself, he said.
About thirty people showed up and we ("we") got ten big six-seat outrigger canoes moved to a slightly safer space.

I welcome my friend from the radio show to do that alone, relying only on himself.
I was amused when one of the "fake" communities he named was "the Jewish community" because, why yes, community is literally built into Jewish life to the degree there are some prayers for which you need a minyan (10 people) to say them.
but he was really on a "personal responsibility" tear about the idea of "single mom" because the only communities he could identify were ones he clearly associated with leftist and liberal politics.
Then he said that his parents had been duped by the idea of community, so it was also clear on top of everything else that he did not respect his parents. I don't know why, but that was an interesting insight.
My patience for people who claim Christianity is persecuted in the USA is already low and made lower when people make statements about Jews/Judaism so clearly originating from a place that centers a Christian or an atheist-out-of-Christianity worldview.
Standard disclaimer: We all come from the place where we are and move forward from there. Just please be aware that that is a place, not an unexamined center of the universe.
One last thing: this is the only one of the local stations that don't use local djs but pipes in everything from a Mainland central location/show. NO LOCAL DJ would ever say something like that. Ever.
