During my mom's era, The Wizard of Oz only played on television once a year. It was a rare evening of no kids playing outside. All the families in the neighborhood would cook a nice dinner for this special movie night. Somehow, nobody knew that the movie was filmed in color.
I've asked her how that was possible and she said they didn't know wtf Technicolor was and being that Google didn't exist and they were in the middle of a civil rights movement, finding out wasn't a high priority.
So anyway, after Pops had a great year at work, he brought home the very first color TV in the neighborhood. He was The Man.
And since their new TV was bigger than everyone else's, he was also The Host of that year's Wizard of Oz movie night.
Let me remind you.... all of these people had been watching the movie annually for years and didn't know that the movie was filmed in color.
This whole entire room of people HAD. NO. IDEA.
THEY. DID. NOT. KNOW.
THIS MOMENT.
These niggas were SHOOK y'all. They were just as surprised as Dorothy.
Like, this was a legit revelation to them. Some ran out to tell the folks who couldn't make it like it was BIG news.
Everyone fell out, they were completely unprepared. They were witnessing the future.
And that's really it. Just wanted to share a story.
