🧵 I was just listening to an episode of democracynow and this guy was talking about how if ppl during the spanish flu epidemic of 1918 had followed all the guidelines the experts r telling
us to follow now. (Wear a mask, wash hands etc). In addition to the leader ship telling the truth. it wouldn’t have been as deadly
He said that not following these things is one of the reasons Covid is so deadly
Having studied spanish flu for a book i never wrote... i tend to agree. We should’ve learned this from the most deadly pandemic and then not repeated it with this one. But we clearly did not and we’re repeating the same mistakes made in 1918 with pretty much the same results.
Somehow, wearing a mask is political and a sign of weakness. Even though wearing a mask should be neither one of these things if u wanna live and u want those around you to live.
Somehow, taking percussions like washing your hands, coughing into your elbow etc is a sign of fear. Even though it shouldn’t be view that way at all.
Did u know that in places where spanish flu hit hardest, churches were shut down until case levels dropped down to manageable levels? Why are we acting like this is the first time churches have ever been closed? It’s not!
Because I mentioned that health experts in the leader ship lied about Spanish flu… Let me just go back to that for a minute.
In 1918 pretty much every country except Spain was in war. Ppl in Spain started writing about this new flu that infected themselves and their king. Basically every other country including the US said, “shh! We don’t wanna hear anything bad. It might destroy morale”
Hence the name, Spanish flu. Health experts in the U. S. told everyone it was the regular flu, but just with a different name. Sound familiar?
During the Spanish flu epidemic of 1918 there was a healthcare shortage… in nurses. A lot of nurses got Spanish flu and died… Sound familiar?
In addition, when President Woodrow Wilson got Spanish flu in France he insisted that the American people not know that he had it and instead insisted that they were told he only had a cold.
Multiple members of President Wilson staff including his daughter Got Spanish flu. Franklin Roosevelt who at that time was a member of the U. S. Navy got it along with about 1/6 of his shipmates and 2000 of them died. Hmmm! Sound familiar?
2 sheep kept on the whitehouse grounds got Spanish flu. Sound familiar? I mean, replace Spanish flu with Covid, take out the bit about them belonging to the president, and replace sheep with cats.
Also during this time there were some schools who were closed because of Spanish flu. As well as other public places. Some even had curfews.
None of this is new stuff and we really should’ve learned from the Spanish flu epidemic of 1918, but we didn’t. We are still learning that lesson right now apparently. Why? / end
