What do you think the greatest historic failures of the #FilmBiz to think strategically or towards the future have been?
Beyond content & representation issues (huge!), the studios mistaken belief that their capital & ability to distribute physical prints was all they needed to remain dominant was one of the major strategic failures, as was overlooking they needed a direct relationship w customer.
Of course the FAANG companies came along with true distribution (digital), more capital than the Studios dreamed possible, AND that direct relationship with customer.
PLUS: the FAANG companies recognized that entertainment made better business sense NOT as an end in itself (i.e. title-based profit & loss)as the Studios had done, but as a utility to drive other businesses & customer engagement/acquisition/data.
ALSO: the historic tendency to restrict technological innovation in order to maintain current revenue streams is not exactly a bright spot.
