As soon as Bolivar "inherited" her, he emancipated her. But, she decided to accompany Bolivar on his fights and travels. In 1814, Matea Bolivar went with María Antonia Bolívar, Simon’s sister to Havana, fleeing the persecution of the royalists.
Unlike his sister María Antonia Bolívar, Matea remained loyal to Simon Bolivar and the independence movement. She returned to Colombia after the Spanish were kicked out.

In 1842, Matea met with Colombian President José Antonio Páez to receive the remains of Simon Bolivar.
Then on October 28, 1876, Matea who was 103 years old at the time, accompanied then President of the Republic, Antonio Guzmán Blanco to bury and honor Simon Bolivar.
Finally, on March 29, 1886, at the age of 112 years, Matea died. Her last words were alleged to have been, "I'm going to where my boy Simon is."

Matea is buried in the Bolivar crypt in the Cathedral of Caracas.
