Again, I waited till after midnight for a take on Joanna Theng and Christianity in Singapore from a Christian misfit's POV.
A brain fart of thoughts and experiences, possibly unstructured.
Having read @skinnylatte's informative article(s) on dominionism, I can only add, somewhat reductively, my experience that Singaporean Christians tend to value knowledge of Christianity (including church legends and gossip) over internalization of Christ's nature and person,
- which is unsurprising since dominionism itself is fuelled by a "privileged knowledge" of God's ultimate plan, and indeed even an implicit fear of Christ's second coming being delayed by the Church's failure to regain control (q.v. NAR, Kingdom Now, 7 Mountains Mandate, etc.)
Many Christians I know, even those from churches that don't openly preach dominionism, bandy about the term "Antioch of Asia", which is often cited at public prayer meetings as the Singaporean Church becoming both an apostolic (evangelical) hub and a prototype for other nations.
"Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up", says 1 Corinthians 3:1. I'm irked that Christian arrogance here has long manifested itself in what I feel are performative displays of charity, as the idea is merely to gain influence with authorities to advance the dominionist agenda...
...and when religious organisations achieve synergy with an authoritarian state, there's no longer any need for the Joanna Thengs to think before speaking. Achieving state aims of conservatism AND preparing the ground for Christ's return - we are Kingdom warriors!
One example: I was at a function some time back which TCJ attended. The language in the days following the event was both self-congratulatory and dominionist ("our Government has recognised the work of this organisation! So let us continue to make Christ known in Singapore!")
And, well, I find that my Christian students are often archetypes of this. They talk long and loud, acting helpful, but eventually the knowledge display surfaces and they put their foot in it Joanna-style, refusing to back down. They're usually first to be ostracised in class.
Perhaps I should apologise; or maybe just sit down and mute. What I will certainly be doing is praying that Christian words will henceforth be few and our acts of love and kindness many, equitable, and discreet.

If God is happy, angry - indeed, if God is - let Him speak.
