sometimes i read jrpg localization differences between japanese/english and get depressed about what it means that english localization usually has to cut out the emotional subtleties, make characters more aggressive towards one another, and downplay some platonic affection.
i think in china/japan there's a specific historical precedent behind deep, fated platonic affection between men, and that always gets downplayed in english localizations. also, if a character only slightly dislikes something, it usually gets turned into hate for the eng version.
i've actually gotten attacked by north american fans over "you think that english language gamers can't handle emotional nuance, conflicted feelings, and layered complexity?" and i'm just like... um, well...
idk maybe i just relate to localization issues because i'm bilingual, i speak subtle english with some underlying implications under the surface that i expect americans to extrapolate, and then they always taken me at complete face value or assume that we're enemies now.
