I’ll be taking a break from Twitter for the foreseeable future. In recent weeks, my livelihood at the firm I built for over 15 years has been threatened. Over Twitter. A guy with less than 2,500 followers. 1
You put your opinion on Twitter — you better expect criticism and questioning. That’s part, I think, about what can make Twitter a great vehicle for civil debate. Do we get into arguments? Sure. Then we make up and post funny pics of our dogs. 2
If I don’t agree with your politics, and you weren’t a troll, I never made it personal. In fact, I respect the hell out of your passion and how you fight for what’s important to you. But isn’t that what America is supposed to be about? We all fight for what we believe in. 3
We all believe in challenging our government every step of the way. Jefferson said, “a little rebellion now and then is a good thing.” He was right. But we’ve lost our way. Rebellion is now only acceptable if you’re on one side of the political spectrum. 4
If you’re a conservative, this is a dangerous time. You can give away your PR services for free to anyone during the lockdown, regardless of their politics, but YOU can’t have a political opinion. It’s wrong. 5
My company shouldn’t be threatened because I have an opinion on #twitter. That’s Orwellian. And here’s what those people in power don’t understand: Their short-sighted tactics will hurt them someday. Because in politics, people have long memories. I know I do. Be well. -end
