I’ve been a single person homeowner since I was 27 years old. If I could go back and talk to my younger self, I’d advise a different plan. Everything ain’t for everybody. My motivation was pure— I wanted a place that my grandparents could share with me should the time come. https://twitter.com/theyelitsa/status/1287011553385029639">https://twitter.com/theyelits...
I bought during the downturn for a good price. I grew up in a family of homeowners. I could not have prepared myself for how much homeownership, as I pursued it, does not agree with me.
On the cusp of my next decade I now see how powerful and valuable it is to make decisions that fit the life you desire for yourself as opposed to the life others desire for you—even the folks who love you most. Nothing has taught me that lesson more than owning this house.
Homeownership has aged me in ways I can’t begin to describe. I am ever grateful for the blessing that is my own space, but I certainly honor that this is not a journey for everyone.
I’ve shared this thinking a lot because it is one of the biggest lessons of my life. Nothing stuck me in place more than that single choice.
