PLEASE READ!About CA

Something I learned as an american studying abroad in japan (so no not korea, but the situations are almost identical in this regard):

Western entitlement is a real thing. As in westerners expect others to know about the rights and wrongs of western culture
We expect people of these large asian countries with the fastest internet speeds to know the ins and outs of cultural appropriation because why not? They are 1st world countries and have access to the internet. They have no excuse right?
Ths is western entitlement. I kind of thought so the same before spending 7 months on that side of the world. They consume our media and is the most technologically advanced country in the world. There’s no way they wouldn’t know about cultural appropriation, right?!
But the truth is, no matter how much you want others to be educated on your culture, if you don’t put in the work, it’s no use. We as westerners sit back and expect people to educate themselves on these topics simply because they have the internet
That couldn’t be further from the case. There’s a cultural barrier between us. Ofc our cultures are different, but what I’m referring to is our way of thinking. As we grow up in a multicultural society that was built on colonization, we are well aware of being culturally sensitiv
It’s almost ingrained in us that we must be sensitive and always take in consideration the feelings of people from other cultures. And our entitlement comes from expecting outsiders to do the same because in the words of some1 I saw today “we gave them internet they shld use it”
But if you grew up in a homogeneous society without even the concept of ca, how would you know what it is or let alone, even look it up? Why would you even look it up if you’re unaware of that way of thinking? If you never received the cultural tools to do so, then you’d stay+
uneducated regardless of how much western media you consume. In Japan they have the concept of politeness. Ofc we have that over here but it’s on a completely different level than our concept of politeness is. A much more deep concept that is ingrained into their sciety and lang
When I tell you that their concept of politeness is a completely different ballpark trust me. And researching tht on American internet does not do the same justice as actually being educated by a real native. I started to feel bad pushing my western entitlement onto them
when they took great time and care educating me.. and I was in THEIR COUNTRY! Bc they don’t have the same sense of enttlemnt that we have and it’s something that we need to address and mentally dismantle as this leads to harmful things such as white saviorism...
It’s the same as going to another country and demanding them to speak english because “well they consume my media and pop culture (which is not deep enough!!) and have wifi so they should know better”
TLDR stop expecting people to know about your culture if they grew up in a homogeneous society outside of your cultre. Youre in a bubble just as much as they are. You need to take the time to educate and if thats too much for your poor western soul, then the problem lies with you
Ps: and before you jump on me before even finishing my thread, I am not excusing any cultural appropriation that an idol or anyone has ever done. I’m giving you context on where they’re coming from so that you can address the situation correctly and NOT jump on the bandwagon
PSS: I AM BLACK. So don’t pull any of that kekekeke bs on me
PSS: By expecting someone to know all the nuances about your own culture, you are robbing their ability to actually learn and grow
