Light a white candle. Play some Gospel music. Dance. Cry. You might not be as churchy as your ancestors. You might not even have a particular religious affiliation. That’s okay. But listen, the spirit is the Black Church Tradition is a part of your spiritual inheritance.
Tamela Mann is reading me all the way to glory right now. Regardless of my proximity to the church, I believe in the power of my ancestors & their abilities to conjure spirit and moves of God regardless of wherever they found themselves situated in life.
My great-grandmother had a prayer closet. Everyone knew that if she went into that closet and prayed, things would start to shift immediately.
She had a dream about a storm coming, prayed, and told my mom not to worry about something odd she had been feeling. Chile. . . come to find out, someone intended my mother harm & they died within a few months. It was one of my moms best friends 😳 that was over 10 years ago.
I’m not suggesting that everyone go listen to gospel music. This message was very specific. I’ll add this, I’m particular about the gospel songs that I listen to. I stay away from songs that center violent & oppressive theologies. I don’t need God to break me etc. Nah.
I have noticed that when I play gospel music & light my altar, I can feel very specific energies and the presence of my prophetic ancestors.
The Black Church has always been filled with oracles, psychics, and mediums. These gifts have been a fundamental part of our faith praxis.
Believe in & engage the spiritual practices that give you a sense of intimacy with the divine. It’s both/and for me. I don’t necessarily have to choose one means of engaging my connectedness.
I believe God is expansive enough to sustain us in seeking truth & love regardless of our means.
If you have elders that you trust, ask them for the spiritual intercession & the prayers/support that you need, too.
“This is a prophetic song. Things are gonna get better. Hold your head up.”
