The "illness" Koro was a mass hysteria that started in China and spread to other countries in Asia. The symptoms were a delusional belief that ones' penis was shrinking into the body.
We all know about the Salem Witch Trials, the most famous mass hysteria in the history of the US.
The Halifax Slasher was a mass hysteria in 1938 England. Two women said they were attacked by a weird guy, and soon there were more and more attacks. Eventually, they all admitted they attacked themselves.
