Since the word “feminist” has become such a charged, polarizing & politicized “label”, hijacked by both men and women alike to push their own idealogies and agendas rooted in division and alienating the “other” —allow me to clear the air on what feminism means to me: a thread 🧵
Feminism is not falling in the trap of saying “a woman’s place is -not- the kitchen” because feminism is all about empowering a woman to be wherever (and whatever) she wants to be: a homemaker or in the operating room (or both) or flying jet planes or a CEO of a company 🧵 2/x
Feminism is and should be intersectional. One glove does not fit all. The collective experiences of POC differs from non-POC. And all experiences should be recognized, validated and supported. Enough of this savior complex— and more of open dialogues and understanding 🧵 3/x
Feminism is accepting that a woman can draw her support from a belief system (in all forms & spectrums), culture/tradition, other women in their communities, & (gasp) even men. Having any of the above doesn’t make her contradictory to the tenants of justice & equal rights 🧵 4/x
Feminism should not be a blanketed attack on men. This approach does not serve anyone. Not the women who are being oppressed by systematic sexism or the men who are trying to be Allies. Feminism should be rooted in justice & ways to dismantle injustice on a systematic level🧵5/x
And finally, feminism is not denying the rights of others. Feminism is fighting for the rights of women, because until women can have equal* rights, society cannot (and will not) advance. *Emphasis on Equity Vs Equality. We need to know the difference, work for it too 🧵 Fin 6/6
