Hello! Here's my daily thread on coronavirus stats globally.

Today:

- US: A new record high for cases. Can America can pull out of this?

- Brazil: Bad to worse.

- Spain: New cases trigger alarm.

- Japan: new record high cases.
Big picture: New cases still climbing globally. Heading to 300K per day.

Global deaths still moving up, and look set to match the first peak earlier this year in April.
The US: Record high new cases yesterday at just over 78,000. Bad news obviously. The worry now is that this peak might turn into a plateau.

Deaths still climbing. Four straight days above 1000.
California: Cases still trending up.

Deaths still trending up.
Florida: A high day for cases slows the pace of decline. You can see the big issue here: Is this a decline or a plateau setting in? We won’t know for several days.

Deaths may have peaked.
Texas: Good news, looks like a steady downward trend has set in for cases.

Deaths are still trending up but may be past the peak.
Illinois is heading into a second wave of cases.

Deaths have stopped declining, but expect them to start rising soon.
Georgia: Record high day for cases. Is this the peak? Or getting worse?

Deaths heading strongly up.
Arizona: Cases are declining in this bellwether state (so-called because it seems to be further along the curve than the others). This is good news because there is no sign of an elevated plateau setting in.

Deaths remain elevated (but they are a lagging indicator).
Brazil: From bad to worse: cases moving strongly up.

Deaths remain in an elevated plateau.
India: Deaths still climbing.
Russia: Deaths remain in decline, following cases down.
South Africa: Record high day for cases yesterday.

Deaths are still heading up, now averaging over 200 per day.
Mexico: Covid cases continue to rise unchecked.

Deaths remain in an elevated plateau.
Peru: Deaths have taken a step down which is good news, except …

… cases are still rising so don’t expect that trend to last.
Chile: Decline in cases remains good, but pace is slowing.

Deaths remain in decline at an average of 81 per day.
Spain: Alarm as two days of cases over 2000.

Deaths are running at about 2 per day.

Spain is planning to impose local lockdowns and shutter nightclubs.
UK: Cases continue to move marginally up.

The trend in deaths continues to decline.
France: Cases are back over 1000 per day.

Deaths have yet to react.
Germany: Cases remain stubbornly in the low hundreds.

Deaths minimal.
Belgium: Cases ticking up. Deaths remain minimal.
Australia: Sharp downward movement in cases. A ray of hope that Oz is avoiding disaster.

Deaths still ticking upward.
Japan: At 927, that is Japan’s highest day ever. Second wave now officially worse than the first.

Deaths remain very low.
Others:

Italy: good

France: good

Germany: good

China: good

S Korea: good

Vietnam: good.

NZ: good.

Canada: good.

Sweden: good.
