thread // day 4

~ a collection of some of the most beautiful words the Irish language has to offer
Let's make this a collaborative thread!!

I'll share my top 10 favourites, but please add some of yours as well :))

By the end of the day, we'll have a big beautiful collection of stór focal na Gaeilge 😍
#1

suaimhneas ~ peace, tranquility rest

- suaimhneas síoraí ~ eternal rest
- faoi shó agus faoi shuaimhneas ~ in peace and comfort
#2

anord ~ chaos

- I like this one because, like chaos, 'anord' is short and succint, but at the same time very loaded with meaning
#3

tromluí ~ nightmare

- trom ~ heavy
- luí ~ to lie

- another very evocative Irish word, with quite a suffocating sense to it
#4

plámás ~ flattery
#5

saoirse ~ freedom

- both as a name and a state of liberation, I am truly in love with this word
#6

dóchas ~ hope

- túr dóchais ~ beacon of hope

- what has been a beacon of hope for you over lockdown?
#7

taisce ~ treasure, hoard

however...
- 'a thaisce!' - my dear!

- having done Economics for the Leaving Cert, I would have only associates 'taisce' with the dreaded 'cuntas taisce' (deposit account😷)... but now I can see the beauty in the word :))
#8

misneach ~ courage
#9

anfa ~ storm, tempest

- ciúnas roimh anfa ~ calm before the storm

- can be used to refer to January to mid-March of this year...
#10

niamh ~ brightness, lustre

- niamh na gréine ~ the brightness of the sun
Over to you now!!

Share some of your favourite words and imagine the collection we could have by the end of the day
